ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced today (Friday, March 1) its Players of the Month for February, honoring University of Michigan freshman Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) as its Gongshow Rookie of the Month.
Nieves led the CCHA and the nation in rookie scoring with four goals and 10 points, helping the Wolverines to a 4-2-0 record in February, including U-M's only two weekend sweeps of the season.
The 2012 second-round draft pick of the New York Rangers scored points in five of six games, notched four multi-point contests, and was named CCHA Gongshow Rookie of the Week on Feb. 4.
The 6-3, 200-pound forward started the month with a pair of goals and an assist against Michigan State in a 3-2 win on Feb. 1. The following night, he added another goal and assist in a 5-2 victory over the Spartans at Joe Louis Arena. Nieves closed out the month at Ohio State (Feb. 22-23) with a three-point weekend.
The Wolverines will play Ferris State tonight and Saturday (March 2) at Yost Ice Arena to end the regular season. Both game will start at 7:35 p.m. The CCHA playoffs will begin the following week.
