ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan ice hockey junior forward Alex Guptill (Newmarket, Ontario) was named today (Tuesday, March 4) as Big Ten Second Star of the Week. Guptill receives his first Big Ten weekly honor this season after a standout weekend against Ohio State.
Guptill led the team with three points (2G, A) and a plus-3 rating in two games against the Buckeyes last weekend and is now third on Michigan with 22 points (11G, 11A) on the season. Guptill, who ranks second in the Big Ten with 110 shots (4.23 shots/game), had 12 shots on goal in two games against Ohio State.
On Friday night (Feb. 28), Guptill recorded his second multiple-goal game of the season, scoring twice to help Michigan earn a 2-2 regulation tie at Yost Ice Arena. His second goal -- with 5:16 remaining in the third period -- helped the Wolverines tie the game and earn a point in the Big Ten standings.
Guptill added an assist in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Buckeyes at Nationwide Arena with a great pass from the corner on Derek DeBlois' (Narragannsett, R.I.) goal at 6:12 of the second period.
Guptill has a three-game point scoring streak and has recorded seven points (4G, 3A) in his last five games played.
The Wolverines return to action on Friday (March 7) against Michigan State at Yost Ice Arena. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.
