FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. -- Freshmen T.J. Hensick (Howell, Mich.) and Matt Hunwick (Roseville, Mich.), members of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association champion University of Michigan ice hockey team, are among the six players named to the CCHA All-Rookie team. The team was selected by a vote of the league's head coaches and was announced Monday (March 8) by the conference office.
Hensick leads Michigan in scoring with 41 points on 11 goals and 30 assists, and his 34 points (10-24-34) in CCHA play made him the leading freshman scorer and second-leading scorer overall in conference play. A two-time CCHA Rookie of the Week selection, he ranks is tied for fourth in the nation in assists per game (0.83) and leads all freshmen in points (41) and assists (30) through games of March 7.
Hunwick, who led the Woverines with a plus-14 rating in conference play, has one goal on the season and ranks sixth on the team with 12 assists. He is the sixth Wolverine defenseman to be named to the All-Rookie team in the last seven years. Hunwick missed two games while helping Team USA to its first gold medal in the IIHF World Junior Championships.
U-M has had at least one CCHA All-Rookie honoree in 12 of the 16 years the team has been selected, and this marks the third straight year -- and the ninth time in the awards' 16 years -- that the Wolverines have had multiple players on the All-Rookie team.
The Wolverines (23-11-2, 18-8-2 CCHA) will open play in the CCHA tournament this weekend, hosting Nebraska-Omaha in a first-round, best-of-three series Friday through Sunday (March 12-14) at Yost Ice Arena. All three games, if necessary, are scheduled for a 7:35 p.m. start.
