ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Hobey Baker Award Committee announced today (Thursday, March 15) its top 10 finalists for the 2012 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, naming goaltender Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team to the group. The award is presented annually the top player in NCAA Division I men's hockey.

Hunwick has appeared in a career-high 37 games this season, posting a 23-10-3 record with five shutouts, a 1.97 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage and setting new single-season career highs in wins and shutouts. He is tied for second nationally in wins, shares third in shutouts, ranks fourth in save percentage and games played and is seventh in goals-against average.

Since a 1-0 win on Dec. 3 at Alaska, Hunwick has posted a 16-3-1 record with four shutouts, a 1.48 goals-against average and a .950 save percentage. During that span, he helped Michigan to the 2011 Great Lakes Invitational championship, stopped a career-high 46 shots in a 4-0 win at Ohio State on Jan. 13, and led the Wolverines to a two-game sweep of Notre Dame in the CCHA Quarterfinals, allowing just two goals in two games.

A former third-string walk-on, Hunwick has appeared in 84 career games for the Maize and Blue, earning a 53-22-7 record with 10 shutouts, a 2.05 goals-against average and a .928 save percentage. He is Michigan's all-time leader in goals-against average and save percentage, ranks fourth in shutouts, is seventh in wins and ranks ninth in games played.

The top 10 finalists will now be voted on by a 23-member selection committee and through a second round of fan balloting to determine the Hobey Hat Trick of three finalists, which will be announced on Thursday, March 29. The 2012 Hobey Baker Memorial Award will be presented on Friday, April 6 at 6 p.m. in Tampa, Fla.
