ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten office announced the dates and opponents for the 2017-18 ice hockey season on Thursday (May 4). The University of Michigan ice hockey team will kick off conference play at Penn State (Oct. 27-28) against the defending B1G Tournament champion. With the addition of the University of Notre Dame as a sport affiliate member for men's ice hockey, schedules for each of the seven conference programs will move to a 24-game format.

Michigan will host the 2017 B1G regular-season champion Minnesota in its conference home opener for a pair of games Nov. 10-11 before heading back on the road for two games the following weekend at Wisconsin Nov. 17-18.

The Maize and Blue will conclude the first half of the season with a home-and-home against in-state rival Michigan State. U-M will host the Spartans on Friday, Dec. 8, and then conclude the weekend series on Saturday, Dec. 9, in East Lansing.

Upon returning from the holiday break, Michigan will welcome the newest member to the Big Ten, Notre Dame, on Friday, Jan. 5, before traveling to South Bend, Indiana, that Sunday, Jan. 7, in a home-and-home weekend doubleheader. This will be the first time U-M will face off with the Fighting Irish since defeating them in overtime, 3-2, in the 2016 NCAA Tournament.

The weekend of Jan. 19-20 Michigan will host Penn State, which the Wolverines swept in Ann Arbor to end the 2016-17 regular season in Red Berenson's final games at Yost Ice Arena.

Michigan and Michigan State will meet Saturday, Feb. 10, in the annual Duel in D, which will be played for the first time at the new Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.

The 2018 Big Ten Men's Ice Hockey Tournament will feature a new three-weekend format with all games taking place on the campus of the higher-seeded teams. The tournament will open March 2-4 with three best-of-three quarterfinal series, as the second-, third- and fourth-seeded teams will each host a series. The top-seeded team will have a bye to the single-elimination semifinals, which are scheduled for Saturday, March 10. The highest-seeded team remaining after the semifinals will host a championship game scheduled for Saturday, March 17.
