Wolverines Add Four Recruits for 2014-15 Season

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team has announced Thursday (Jun. 12) the addition of four recruits for the 2014-15 season. Forwards Tony Calderone (Trenton, Mich.) and Alex Talcott (Kentwood, Mich.) along with defensemen Sam Piazza (Darien, Ill.) and Niko Porikos (Ann Arbor, Mich.) have committed to the Wolverines beginning with the upcoming season.

Tony Calderone, F: Played two seasons with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League (USHL) ... Finished second on the team in goal-scoring and fifth on the team in points with 24 goals and 17 assists in 60 games played ... In 2012-13, recorded 44 points (29 goals, 15 assists) in 64 games to lead Sioux Falls to a regular season Western Conference championship ... Selected as the first overall pick in the 2012 USHL Draft ... In 2011-12, was the top scorer in all of Tier 1 Midget Major with Victory Honda, recording 65 points (38 goals, 27 assists) in 40 games ... native of Trenton, Mich.

"Tony comes here with the reputation of a player who puts numbers up and has a great shot," associate head coach Billy Powers said. "Offensively, we expect Tony to add to his game here. He's a skilled offensive player who has had two good years in the USHL"

Sam Piazza, D: Served as team captain for the Wichita Falls Wildcats of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) in 2013-14 ... Finished fifth among NAHL defensemen with 37 points (11 goals, 26 assists) in 58 games, leading Wichita Falls to the NAHL Playoffs ... Started the 2012-13 season with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League (USHL) before joining Wichita Falls in February 2013, recording three goals and six assists in 42 games combined ... native of Darien, Ill.

"Sam is a defenseman who is not afraid to join the rush," Powers said. "He's got great offensive instincts and we're hoping that he adds some offense at the blue line. We're excited that Sam will have an opportunity to show what he can do early on."

Niko Porikos, D: Played two seasons with the Hamilton Red Wings of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) ... Led all Hamilton defensemen in scoring in 2013-14, recording 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 51 games played ... In 2012-13, notched 12 points (four goals, eight assists) in 48 games played ... Spent time at forward in two seasons with Hamilton ... Former Victory Honda U18 teammate of incoming freshmen Tony Calderone and Cutler Martin, as well as current sophomore Max Shuart ... native of Ann Arbor, Mich.

"With Niko, we like the fact that we're getting an older player that has had significant experience in junior hockey," Powers said. "He's played both forward and defense in his career, and we've seen the benefits of having a guy like Andrew Sinelli."

Alex Talcott, F: Played two seasons with the Indiana Ice of the United States Hockey League (USHL) ... Helped lead Indiana to a Clark Cup championship, scoring the game-tying goal in a 3-2 win in game five over the Waterloo Blackhawks on May 20 ... Recorded 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in 57 games, adding two goals and four assists in 11 playoff games ... In 2012-13, recorded 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 51 games with Indiana ... native of Kentwood, Mich.

"Alex had a great finish to his junior career," Powers said. "He's an energy guy, a strong player and he's going to provide some real quality depth on our right side."
