ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team was picked to finish third in the inaugural season of Big Ten hockey as voted on by the coaches, the conference announced during the first-ever Big Ten Hockey Media Day on Thursday (Sept. 19).
Coach Red Berenson and Bennett also addressed the media at the Xcel Energy Center, where more than 100 reporters were credentialed to cover the event.
Michigan returns 18 letterwinners from a season ago, including three of its top five point scorers in Guptill (16g, 20a), sophomore Cristoval 'Boo' Nieves (Baldwinsville, NY) (8g, 21a), and junior Phil Di Giuseppe (Maple, Ontario) (9g, 19a). The Wolverines finished the 2012-13 season winning eight of their last 10 games (8-1-1) en route to the CCHA Championship game.
U-M opens its exhibition schedule on Sunday, Oct. 6, vs. the University of Waterloo at 4:30 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena. The 2013-14 regular-season campaign begins with a marquee game against Boston College on Thursday, Oct. 10. The season-opening contest will take place at Yost Ice Arena and is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
