ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team received the No. 1 ranking from U.S. College Hockey Online in its preseason poll, which was released on Monday (Sept. 27). In the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine preseason poll the Wolverines were selected No. 2 behind Boston College.

The No. 1 ranking is the first for Michigan since the Oct. 30 poll in 2000 when both the USCHO and USA Today/USAHM polls had U-M tops in the nation. Additionally, Michigan is No. 1 in the preseason for the first time since 1996-97 when USA Today/USAHM had the Maize and Blue first in its season-opening poll on Oct. 14, 1996.

In the USCHO rankings Michigan received 17 out of a possible 40 first-place votes and had 541 total points. Second was Maine with nine first-place votes and 493 total points. In the USA Today/USAHM poll the Wolverines received more first-place votes (16) than the Eagles (9), however, B.C. had 449 points compared to Michigan's 441.

Two other Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams also appear in both preseason polls. Michigan State is ninth in both rankings and Ohio State is 12th in the USCHO and 13th in the USA Today/USAHM. Miami (Ohio) is 15th in the USCHO poll but unranked in the USA Today/USAHM listing. The Western Collegiate Hockey Association leads all conferences with six teams among the top 15 in each poll.

Michigan finished with a 27-14-2 record in 2003-04, winning the CCHA regular-season title and earning its record 14th straight NCAA tournament appearance. The Wolverines return 21 letterwinners and welcome two newcomers to the team in 2004-05.

Head coach Red Berenson will prepare for the start of his 21st season at the helm of the Wolverines in the team's exhibition game vs. Windsor on Saturday (Oct. 2) at 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena. The Maize and Blue will open its 83nd season of hockey against Northeastern on Friday (Oct. 8) at the Lefty McFadden Invitational in Dayton, Ohio.
