ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team will start the 2002-03 campaign ranked among the nation's top three programs, as USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and U.S. College Hockey Online revealed their preseason polls on Monday (Sept. 30). The Wolverines are second in the USA Today poll while USCHO.com ranks U-M third. Minnesota, the defending NCAA champion, was an overwhelming favorite to top both lists.

Michigan, the 2001-02 CCHA regular-season and Super Six champion, received two of 15 first-place votes in the USA Today poll and three of a possible 40 first-place votes in the USCHO.com balloting. USCHO.com ranked Denver second behind Minnesota, while USA Today placed the Pioneers behind the Wolverines.

In addition to Michigan, three other schools from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association are represented in the rankings. Michigan State is seventh in both polls, Northern Michigan is ranked 11th and 12th by USCHO.com and USA Today, respectively, and Ohio State is 15th in both rankings.

Michigan will stage its annual Blue/White Intrasquad on Friday (Oct. 4) at 7:05 p.m. in preparation for the 2002-03 season. The following night (Oct. 5), the Wolverines will open the 2002-03 campaign, and their 81st season of intercollegiate hockey, hosting Canadian foe Toronto University in an exhibition contest. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
