ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Blue team prevailed, 4-2, over the White squad as the University of Michigan ice hockey team welcomed back a handful of former players on Sunday (Oct. 7) for the Blue/White Alumni Game at the newly renovated Yost Ice Arena. Defensemen Jack Johnson (2006-07) and Matt Hunwick (2004-07), as well as forwards Andy Hilbert (2000-01), Mike Knuble (1992-95) and Matt Rust (2008-11) all made the trip back to Ann Arbor for the game.
Blue opened the scoring with the lone first-period goal and one early in the second frame before the white squad tied it up midway through the period. Blue then score twice later in the second for the game-winner and insurance marker.
Blue's Alex Guptill (Newmarket, Ontario) put the first two goals on the board early in the first with help from Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) and again early in the second on a power play to bring the score to 2-0. A few minutes later, White's Knuble answered with back-to-back goals, one of which was unassisted, locking the score at an even 2-2.
Guptill netted his third of the night after an assist from goaltender Adam Janecyk (Ada, Mich.) in the second stanza to put the Blue team ahead by one, and junior forward Derek DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) sealed the deal late in the period with another tally to bring the game to 4-2.
The Blue Team managed to hold on to its two-goal lead through a scoreless third period.
