ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated Denison, 12-8, in exhibition action on Saturday (Feb. 4) inside Oosterbaan Field House. Trailing 2-1 after the first quarter, U-M scored eight of the game's next 11 goals over the second and third periods to seize control.
Fifth-year senior attackman Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) had a game-high five goals, including three in a row during the third quarter, while freshman attackman David McCormack (Terrace Park, Ohio/Mariemont) had three goals and an assist. Sophomore attackman Jeff Chu (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) contributed three assists to lead all players. In goal, freshman Emil Weiss (Cary, N.C./Apex) had five saves, three of which came in the first quarter.
The Wolverines fell into a 2-0 hole in the first quarter, but a tally by Yealy and two from McCormack gave U-M its first lead of the game with 12:38 left in the second quarter. Denison and Michigan traded goals to end the half, with U-M in front 4-3.
Yealy single-handedly put the Wolverines ahead 7-3 by scoring at 14:04, 10:03 and 7:29 of the third quarter as U-M held a 9-5 advantage after 45 minutes of play.
Michigan stretched its lead to 11-5 a minute into the fourth quarter, before Denison rattled off three straight goals to make it a three-goal game with four minutes remaining. Seventeen seconds later, Yealy scored his final goal to halt the Big Red comeback bid.
The Wolverines play their inaugural varsity game next Sunday (Feb. 12) against Detroit Mercy. Game time is 1 p.m. at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac, Mich. Tickets can be purchased through the Detroit Mercy ticket office or at the USA box office.
