COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team downed the Ohio State Buckeyes, 1-0, behind a goal from sophomore James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Boxx School) in the 25th minute Sunday (Oct. 6) at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The win gives the Wolverines back-to-back victories for the first time this season.
Murphy put U-M on the board at 24:22 with his third goal of the campaign on a side volley from 24 yards out, stinging the far corner. Off a quick restart, junior Marcos Ugarte (Providence, R.I./Providence) fed the sophomore and was credited with his first assist as a Wolverine.
The Wolverines did not allow a shot for the first 33 minutes of the match. When called upon, senior/junior Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills) was strong in net, with his efforts being highlighted by a point-blank save with 38 minutes to go to preserve his second clean sheet of the season.
In the 70th minute, senior Malcolm Miller (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) was taken down 22 yards out. However, the following free kick from senior Fabio Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/South Kent School (Conn.)) sailed narrowly high, representing U-M's most notable chance of the second stanza.
U-M continues its Big Ten road swing on Friday (Oct. 11) against the Penn State Nittany Lions. The match is slated for an 8 p.m. start after being pushed back an hour from the previously announced start time of 7 p.m.
