STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team was defeated 3-1 by the Penn State Nittany Lions on Friday (Oct. 11) at Jeffrey Field. Freshman Yamann Sahlool (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) netted his first career goal, in the 84th minute, and the Wolverines outshot the Nittany Lions, 16-9, on the night; but a 2-0 halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome.

The Nittany Lions got on the board first in the 11th minute, as PSU drew a penalty kick that was converted by Martin Seiler lower left.

Michigan went into the half down 1-0 but held a 7-5 shot advantage. The first-half offensive highlights were headlined by a shot from senior Malcolm Miller (Lawrenceville, Ga./Collins Hill) off a service from senior/junior Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) in the 40th minute.

Penn State stretched its lead to 2-0 right out of the box in the second half, as Owen Griffith took a ball down the left flank from Connor Maloney. Griffith cut inside the 18 and found the back of the net from 12 yards out at 47:44.

After Penn State's Grant Warming put the match out of reach 3-0 in the 80th minute, Sahlool put the Wolverines on the board, capitalizing on a loose ball inside the 18 and beating Penn State's Andrew Wolverton lower left.

U-M returns to home action at the friendly confines of U-M Soccer Stadium on Tuesday (Oct. 15), as the Wolverines play host to the Creighton Blue Jays, currently ranked No. 7, at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast like via the Big Ten Network, with Dan Kelly and Kevin Egan calling the action.
