ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team earned its first victory over a ranked opponent this season, downing the No. 12 Creighton Blue Jays, 1-0, Tuesday night (Oct. 15) at U-M Soccer Stadium.

A score from freshman Lars Eckenrode (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) at the 76:08 mark proved to be the difference, as he put home a corner from senior Fabio Pereira (Sao Paulo, Brazil/South Kent School (Conn.)).

Michigan came right out the gates with a golden chance from junior/sophomore Colin McAtee (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) in the third minute, but the streaking try at the gaping net was misfired high and wide left from the right flank.

U-M continued to best the offensive portion of the match, with Pereira linking up with both sophomore James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Box School) and junior/sophomore Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) with the first try coming in the 12th minute and the latter in the 24th minute.

Overall, the Wolverines had four quality chances on frame in the opening stanza, three of which were turned away by Creighton (6-4-2) goalkeeper Alex Bolowich, who was featured in keeping the score line even at 0-0 heading in the half.

Through the first half, U-M outshot the Jays, 9-5, with a pair on goal going from the foot of Pereira.

Another opportunity came from Arnone in the 65th minute, as he took a feed from Murphy and sailed one high from 14 yards out.

U-M was finally rewarded for its efforts in the 77th minute, as Pereira served up an in-swinging corner that was put home by Eckenrode with the side of his right foot on the back post for his first collegiate goal.

Michigan returns to action for its second of five consecutive home matches Sunday (Oct. 20) against Big Ten foe Wisconsin at noon. The afternoon marks the program's pink match in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
