BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team used goals from sophomore/junior Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) and freshman James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Box School) to rally to its first road victory under head coach Chaka Daley and a 2-1 defeat at No. 11 Indiana on Friday (Oct. 19) at Armstrong Stadium. U-M wins for the first time over IU since 2008 and second time ever against the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers got on the scoreboard first, in the 27th minute, as a through ball skimmed off a Wolverine defender's head on to the foot of Femi Hollinger-Janzen inside the 18-yard box. The Hoosier freshman then slid a right-footed shot under junior/sophomore goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills) for the 1-0 IU advantage.
The Wolverines answered seven minutes later, as the duo of junior Fabio Pereira (Sao Paolo, Brazil/South Kent [Conn.]) and Arnone connected on a 1-2 pass at the top of the 18. Arnone took the service and buried the ensuing shot in the lower left side of the net to knot the contest at 1-1.
The Maize and Blue took the lead for good in the 48th minute, as Murphy found the illusive first goal of his collegiate career on a spectacular finish after a feed from junior T.J. Roehn (Tampa, Fla./South Florida). Murphy took the pass from Roehn at the top of the 18, dodged a defender and found the lower right corner of the net to give U-M the 2-1 lead with 42 minutes of action remaining.
Michigan then defended an IU onslaught in the final 10 minutes of action, as the Hoosiers earned four corners and four shots on goal in the waning minutes of play. However, a stout back line, led by Grinwis, who turned away seven shots on the match.
U-M now returns home for a four-match homestand to close out the 2012 regular season, beginning with a Tuesday (Oct. 23) matchup against the Bowling Green Falcons at 7 p.m. from U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines hold a 4-2-1 record in the friendly confines on their home pitch this season.
