MGoBlue.com's Scott Kemps recently caught up with freshman defender Billy Stevens, who is currently on campus taking part in the U-M Summer Bridge Program. Originally from New Hyde Park, N.Y., Billy is a former member of the U-14 and U-15 U.S. National Team. He was recently ranked as the No. 65 player in the IMG Academy 150 and the No. 40 player in the country by CollegeSoccerNews.com.
On choosing Michigan ...
I chose Michigan because it was everything that I wanted in a school. It is a perfect balance between an athletic and academic institution. As soon as I came here on my visit, Coach McMenemy and Coach Daley really made me feel welcomed from the time I stepped on campus. Fellow New Yorkers Tyler Arnone and Brett Nason made me feel right at home, as did Jack Brown.
On this season's recruiting class ...
Being included in this recruiting class, the No. 2 class in the country, is something special. We really have a lot of talented guys in this group, and I am really excited to see what we can accomplish as a group during our time together in Ann Arbor.
On the upcoming season ...
I am really looking forward to the experiences of this year in general, whether I start, or come off the bench. My role is to make our team better any way that I can, and help us win games.
On his familiarity with other players on the squad ...
Playing with guys like Michael Kapitula before at Red Bulls will definitely ease the process, as he and I played together in the past on the left side of the field, with myself playing left back and him playing left mid. We really had to make sure we communicated properly. I have played with Evan (Louro) since we were members of the Red Bull New York U-14 squads. When he is in net, I always have confidence that he is going to stop every shot that comes at him.
