LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Senior midfielder Fabio Villas Boas Pereira (Sao Paolo, Brazil/South Kent School [Conn.]) of the University of Michigan men's soccer team was named to TopDrawerSoccer.com's Preseason Best XI first team, the website announced on Tuesday (July 30).
Pereira enters 2013 leading the team in scoring the past two seasons and is creeping up the Michigan career record books in assists, shots attempted and games played. He enters his senior season with 18 career assists, 10 behind program leader Adam Bruh (2002-05) with 28. He is currently No. 8 in shots attempted with 143, just 43 shots behind all-time leader Mauro Fuzetti (2006-09) with 186. Pereira has also played in 62 matches in his career, which is 23 behind former teammate Latif Alashe (2009-12).
Pereira was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman team in 2010 and was U-M's Offensive MVP in 2011. Last season, he started 20 matches registering six goals and eight assists. Three of his scores came via penalty kicks.
Pereira is joined by two other Big Ten standouts with Indiana's AJ Corrado and Northwestern's Chris Ritter making the first team midfield.
Last fall, Chaka Daley led the Wolverines to a six-win turnaround season with a 11-10-1 overall record, a berth in the Big Ten championship game and a NCAA Tournament victory. The squad returns 2012 All-Big Ten first team midfielder Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./St. John's), All-Big Ten second team goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./ Forest Hills), All-Big Ten Freshman honoree James Murphy (Oxford, England/Henry Box School) and Pereira.
Michigan opens up the 2013 season against Loyola-Chicago on Friday (Aug. 30) at 3 p.m. inside the U-M Soccer Stadium.
