Blue Collar Blog: Big Bear Trophy, Expectations
James Murphy

Nov. 6, 2013

The Wolverines will give fans the inside scoop on the goings on of Michigan men's soccer all season in the Blue Collar Blog. James Murphy scribes the latest installment and touches on the Battle for Big Bear.

Hello U-M soccer fans! This is sophomore striker James Murphy here with the latest installment of the Blue Collar Blog!

I would like to first and foremost take the opportunity to thank you all the seniors for their four years of continuous hard work and dedication to the Michigan Soccer program. I know how much all the guys have all given for this team and Monday's good 1-0 win against

Valparaiso was a fitting end to the last regular season home game of the 2013 season. It's pretty unbelievable to think that the team now begins to prepare for the last regular season game on Saturday against rivals Michigan State where the battle for the 'Big Bear' trophy will be on the line! I know I speak for everyone on the team when I say we can't wait to get out there on Saturday and defend the trophy. The Michigan-Michigan State rivalry is one of the best and most fierce rivalries in college soccer and we will be doing everything we possibly can to make sure we bring that bear back to Ann Arbor with us!

After the Michigan State game, we will turn our attention to the Big Ten Tournament and travel down to Columbus, Ohio, on Tuesday. Following our great run to the final last year and our recent good form, morale in the team is very high. We know if we play our best soccer we are capable of beating anyone in the country, and after last year's painful defeat to Michigan State, we are all desperate to go one better than last year and win the tournament!

Having played last year, I think that there is a slightly different atmosphere around the squad this year with the post season looming large. Expectation levels are definitely a little higher and we know that if we can finish the season well we will be in a fantastic position for a deep NCAA Tournament run, which is something I know this team is more than capable of.

Finally I would like to thank the tremendous support we have had throughout this season from our families, friends, supporters and the athletic department. You have all been fantastic, and your support only continues to drive us to take Michigan Soccer to the next level!

Take care and Go Blue!
