FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Senior Kofi Opare (Niagara Falls, Ont./St. Paul) of the University of Michigan men's soccer team has been selected to take part in the 2013 adidas MLS Player Combine, to be held Jan. 11-15 at Central Broward Regional Park in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Opare becomes the eighth Michigan player to participate in the MLS pre-draft combine and the first since Justin Meram in 2011.
Opare comes in at No. 13 all-time in matches played with 76, eighth in matches started (71) and fifth in minutes played (6,411). He was named to the College Sports Madness preseason All-Big Ten squad prior to the 2012 season. Opare was an All-Big Ten second team honoree in 2011 as well as team defensive MVP. This past season, the tri-captain had a career-high three goals, two coming off headers, in 17 matches. He also helped guide a Michigan back line that surrendered 1.15 goals per match.
The players invited will be divided into four squads led by collegiate coaches and select youth coaches. Matches will be played as doubleheaders on Jan. 11, 13 and 15.
The 2013 MLS SuperDraft will be help for the ninth consecutive year in conjunction with the National Soccer Coaches of American (NSCAA) Convention, and will take place on Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis, Ind. The draft will commence at noon.
The draft comprises of two rounds and 38 overall selections. A four-round supplemental draft will take place via conference call on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
