COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team captured wins in seven of eight swimming events on day one of the Ohio State Tri-Meet Friday (Jan. 27) and holds a commanding lead over the No. 8-ranked Buckeyes (100-86) and No. 24 Penn State (147-39) at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion. Junior Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) led the Wolverines on day one with a pair of event wins, in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.
The night began with the first win of the competition for the Maize and Blue, as the quartet of Miguel Ortiz, freshman Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), sophomore John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy) and senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) notched a 3:13.20 in the 400-yard medley relay.
Next was sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven), who collected a win in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a pool-record time of 9:03.44, which currently ranks fifth in the nation.
U-M earned a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle, as sophomore Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) paced the competition with a 1:37.47. Madwed took second with a 1:37.63, while sophomore Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) took third with a 1:38.69.
Miguel Ortiz kept the trend going in the 50-yard freestyle, capturing the victory with a 20.21, while junior Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) took third in the event with a 20.45. Ortiz then made it back-to-back event wins in the next event, the 100-yard backstroke, as he touched the wall in a time of 47.72, beating his closest competitor by more than one second to double up his event win total.
Freshman Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Stratchcona) continued his stellar inaugural Maize and Blue campaign in the 200-yard breaststroke with an event-winning 2:02.15. Madwed followed in the 200-yard fly with an event-best 1:45.99.
Michigan returns to the pool Saturday (Jan. 28) for day two of competition, which commences at noon. [ Event Schedule ]
