ATLANTA, Ga. -- Four members of the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team were in action at the 2014 Yellow Jacket Championship Qualifier on Saturday (March 8), held inside the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Saturday's meet marked the last chance for NCAA swimmers to earn automatic- or provisional-qualifying marks ahead of the NCAA Championships, which are to be held from March 27-29 in Austin, Texas.
Freshman Cameron Stitt (Portland, Ore./Sunset) was the only man to swim the mile on Saturday, but he managed to cut nearly four seconds off his season-best time. He finished at 15:03.51, up from his season-best time of 15:07.39.
Freshman Chris Klein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and sophomore Matt McNamara (Huntington Woods, Mich./Univ. of Detroit Jesuit) both swam the 100-yard breaststroke, but neither swimmer surpassed his previous season-best time. Klein swam the race in 53.81 (up from 54.20 in the morning), while McNamara came in at 54.70, lower than both his season best (53.43) and his time from the morning (54.48).
Freshman Jason Chen (Pleasanton, Calif./Amador Valley) was the other swimmer in action. He took part in a time trial of the 100-yard backstroke, getting clocked at 47.15. His season-best time in that race was 46.93, set at the Michigan First Chance Meet two weeks ago.
The four men will now wait and see if they have qualified to the NCAA Championships. The full list of participants and the official psych sheet on Wednesday (March 12).
