BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team took part in the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships this week (Thu-Sat., March 8-10) at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Wolverines failed to qualify any divers for the NCAA Championships, but sophomore Jack Lee (North Egremont, Mass./Berkshire School) made the finals in both the one-meter and platform diving events.
Along with Lee, classmates James Ross (Richmond, Va./Collegiate) and Thomas Jahnke (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) took part in all three events, while fellow sophomore Chris Ervasti (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere) competed on the one- and three-meter boards.
Lee led the charge on all three days of action, taking 20th on day one (Thursday) on three-meter with a 287.20. He then punched consecutive tickets to the finals, beginning on day two (Friday), taking 14th with a 603.05, and scored a 671.80 on platform in the final day (Saturday) of competition to earn a seventh-place finish.
Ross was consistently U-M's No. 2 diver on the championship, as he took 30th with a 268.90 on day one in three-meter springboard. One day two, Ross took 33rd with a 256.00. Day three, Ross took 16th with a 258.90 on platform.
Jahnke placed 39th on three-meter on day one with a 253.95 and 36th on one-meter on day two (255.55). His championship was highlighted by a 15th-place finish on platform, where he tallied a 313.00.
Ervasti competed on three-meter and notched a 232.15 to take 45th on day one before placing 37th on one-meter with a 252.35. He did not compete on platform in day three.
Michigan will go for its 12th consecutive top-10 finish at the NCAA Championships, held March 22-24 in Federal Way, Washington. Thirteen swimmers will compete.
