Auböck Sets Record, Relay Finishes 11th to Begin NCAAs

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team finished 11th in the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:14.75) to open the 2017 NCAA Championships on Wednesday (March 22) at IUPUI Natatorium. The Wolverines scored 12 points with that finish and sit in 11th place after the first day.

"It was great to be in the battle tonight," said head coach Mike Bottom. "If we can fight the way we did tonight for the rest of the meet, we'll be alright."

Freshman Felix Auböck was sharp on the leadoff leg, going 1:32.02 to overtake Michael Wynalda (2014, 1:32.14) for the school record. He jumped from fourth, shaving more than a second off his previous best (1:33.27). The rest of the team consisted of senior Jack Mangan (1:34.21), junior Tristan Sanders (1:34.10) and sophomore Mokhtar Al-Yamani (1:34.42). The same quartet swam at the Big Ten Championships and was right on their time from the Big Ten Championships (6:14.00).

The NCAA Championships continue tomorrow (Thursday, March 16) at IUPUI Natatorium. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m. with finals following at 6 p.m.
