ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team won its second dual meet in six days, winning all 14 swimming events to cruise past Minnesota, 170-124, on Friday (Oct. 5) at Canham Natatorium. Junior Connor Jaeger (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) and sophomore Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) each won a pair of races in the victory.

The Wolverines were in command form the opening race. The 200-yard medley relay team of Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International), Funk, Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and Zachary Turk (Akron, Ohio/St. Edwards) touched the wall first at 1:27.40, almost a full two seconds faster than the Wolverines' quartet last Saturday (Sept. 29) against Wisconsin. Jaeger followed with his second straight win in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:08.33) while also winning the 500-yard freestyle (4:26.88).

Turk won the 50-yard freestyle (20.14) and finished second in the 100-yard freestyle (45.31), while Ortiz won the 100-yard freestyle (45.02) and finished second in the 50-yard freestyle (20.31). The Wolverines also had a clean sweep in the 200-yard freestyle, occupying first-through-fourth place, led by senior/junior Hassaan Abdel Khalik (Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate), in first (1:38.80). Freshman Peter Brumm (Cornelius, N.C./Hough), last Saturday's winner, took second (1:38.87).

Other individual-event winners included M. Ortiz in the 100-yard backstroke (48.45), freshman Dylan Bosch (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College, Sandton) in the 200-yard butterfly (1:47.04), junior Ryutaro Kamiya (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) in the 200-yard backstroke (1:48.85), Fletcher in the 100-yard butterfly (48.22) and junior Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) in the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.70).

The Wolverines return to Canham Natatorium tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 6) to host the first-ever Michigan Water Carnival, which begins at noon. The Carnival will feature co-ed teams from Michigan and Minnesota, as well as the Oakland University men's swimming team. The 13-event schedule features swimming races never seen before in a collegiate meet, as well as a diving show and water polo scrimmages. Admission is free.
