WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Eleven members of the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team were in action on day one of the Purdue Invitational, held on Friday (Nov. 16) at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. Junior diver Jack Lee (North Egremont, Mass./Berkshire School) had the team's highest finish of the day, taking fourth on the one-meter board (290.85).
Freshman Matt McNamara (Huntington Woods, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) was U-M's only 'A' finalist in the swimming pool on the evening, taking eighth in the 200-yard individual medley (1:51.17). Fellow freshman Will Raynor (Omaha, Neb./Creighton Prep) swam in the 'B' final of the same race, taking 13th (1:51.65).
U-M had a pair of 'B' finalists in the 500-yard freestyle. Junior/sophomore Jonathon Ekleberry (Rochester, Mich./Avondale) touched the wall in 13th place (4:34.32), and freshman Matt Zimmerman (Maumee, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) followed behind in 16th place (4:37.84).
Michigan did not swim anybody in the 50-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle relay or 400-yard medley relay. Only 16 student-athletes made the trip to Purdue.
The Wolverines return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Nov. 17) for the second day of the Purdue Invitational. Preliminaries begin at 10 a.m., with finals starting at 6 p.m.
