ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a limited number of swimmers competing, the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the Michigan Open on Sunday (Nov. 24) at Canham Natatorium. A number of underclassmen set personal bests on the final day of competition.
In the 'B' final of the 100-yard freestyle, Vinny Tafuto (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) tied for first with a time of 45.58. Among the U-M personal bests were Aaron Ghiglieri (Central Point, Or./Cascade Christian) touching at 45.68, and Colin Eaton (Gresham, Or./Corbett) clocking in at 46.23 during 100 free prelims.
The 200-yard butterfly yielded personal records for all four Michigan swimmers in the event. Swimming in the 'A' final, Nick Killeen (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) clocked in at 1:50.93 en route to a seventh-place finish. Julian Ballestas (Miami, Fl./Belen Jesuit) finished first in the 'B' final for his personal record of 1:50.79, and Keltan Lawler (Los Gatos, Ca./Los Gatos) and Henry Parker (John's Creek, Ga./John's Creek) touched in at 1:51.12 and 1:53.53, respectively.
In the final event of the evening, the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Tafuto, Ballestas, Ghiglieri and Eaton pulled out a third-place finish with a time of 3:00.85.
The Wolverines wrap up the calendar year at the U.S. Winter National Championships, set to be held Dec. 5-7 in Knoxville, Tenn.
