IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming team earned a trio of individual titles and one relay crown on Friday (Dec. 2) on day one of the Hawkeye Invitational at the Iowa Aquatic Center. In addition to the individual excellence, Michigan's 400-yard medley relay squad collected a victory with a meet-record time.
The Wolverines took first, second and third place in the 200-yard individual medley, as sophomore Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) captured the race title with a time of 1:44.83, a pool record. Classmate John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy) took second, notching a time of 1:46.34, while senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) closed out the top three (1:47.58).
The Wolverines took the 400-yard medley relay with a 3:15.23 pool record. The quartet consisted of senior Jan Konarzewski (Warsaw, Poland/LO im Andersa), sophomore Kyle Duckitt (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. John's College), Wojciechowski and sophomore Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville).
The Michigan freestylers turned in a quality performance on day one, as sophomore Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) and classmate Sean Ryan (Hixson, Tenn./McCallie School) notched a 1-2 finish in the 500-yard freestyle. The pair earned times of 4:15.94 and 4:19.85, respectively, as Jaeger's time narrowly missed an NCAA 'A' qualifying standard.
The first day concluded with another Wolverine event title, as junior Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg) won the 50-yard freestyle in 19.69, another pool record, after a timing failure that was reviewed via video replay. Freshman Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) also managed to find himself in the top three after collecting a time of 19.88.
The Wolverines return to the pool tomorrow (Saturday, Dec. 3) for day two of competition. Action commences at 10 a.m. CST with prelims, followed by the finals at 6 p.m. The Campus Recreation and Wellness Center is in its second season of hosting competitions. It opened during the summer of 2010.
