ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Junior Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) of the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was named Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week by the conference office on Tuesday (Jan. 7).
At the Orange Bowl Classic last Friday (Jan. 3) during the team's training trip, Ortiz won two individual events and swam on both of Michigan's winning relay teams, helping the Wolverines secure first place at the meet for the fifth consecutive year. He won the 50-meter freestyle (23.10) and 50-meter breaststroke (28.07) while also swimming on the winning 200-meter freestyle relay (1:32.33) and the 200-meter medley relay (1:41.72).
Currently, Ortiz ranks first in the Big Ten in both the 50-yard freestyle (19.53) and the 100-yard freestyle (43.26) and is tied for 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.36). Nationally, Ortiz is tied for ninth in the 50-yard freestyle.
Michigan returns to competition this Friday (Jan. 10) when it faces Big Ten rival Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The meet will begin at 6 p.m.
