ROSEMONT, Ill. -- University of Michigan junior Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) was named Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week on Tuesday (Jan. 21) by the conference office. It is his third career weekly honor.
Funk posted four first-place finishes at the SMU Classic last weekend (Jan. 17-18) in Dallas, helping the Wolverines finish first as a squad. Individually, he won the 100-yard breaststroke (52.31) and 200-yard breaststroke (1:54.75) while aiding to relay wins in the 200-yard medley relay (1:26.18) and 400-yard medley relay (3:07.76). His time in the 100-yard breaststroke was an NCAA automatic-qualifying time, a Perkins Natatorium record and the current No. 2 time in that race in the country. The 200-yard medley relay team also set a pool record.
Michigan returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 1, when it faces rival Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The meet will begin at 11 a.m.
