PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) and freshman Dylan Bosch (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College, Sandton) of the top-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team were named Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced on Tuesday (Jan. 22). Both men helped Michigan finish second at the SMU Classic over the weekend (Jan. 18-19) in Dallas, Texas.
Ortiz swam six events at the SMU Classic. His lone individual win came in the 100-yard backstroke (46.77), a race that he won by nearly two full seconds. He also assisted to a pair of relay wins, first on the 400-yard medley relay (3:10.64) and later on the 200-yard medley relay (1:26.48), while also helping the 200-yard freestyle relay team to a second-place finish (1:19.57). Individually, Ortiz was also second in the 200-yard backstroke (1:45.05) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (20.10). It is his third weekly laurel of the season (Oct. 30, Dec. 4).
Like Ortiz, Bosch also swam six events. He took second in the 200-yard butterfly (1:44.58) and third in the 100-yard butterfly (48.01), while also finishing second (officially eighth) in the 'B' final of both the 400-yard individual medley (3:51.70) and 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.39). He also swam on the winning 200-yard medley relay team with Ortiz (1:26.48) and on the 800-yard freestyle relay (6:31.71), which finished third. It is Bosch's sixth weekly honor this season (Oct. 2, Oct. 9, Oct. 30, Dec. 4, Jan. 8).
The Wolverines are off this week, but return to the pool next weekend (Feb. 1-2) for a two-day dual meet with Ohio State at Canham Natatorium. The meet begins on Friday, Feb. 1, at 5 p.m. and concludes at noon on Saturday, Feb. 2.
