Official Release

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The International Swimming Hall of Fame (ISHOF) announced last Tuesday (Jan. 28) that former University of Michigan men's swimmer Tom Malchow (1996-99) will be inducted as part of the Class of 2014. The induction will take place on June 14, 2014, in Fort Lauderdale.

Malchow swam the 200-meter butterfly in three Olympic Games for the United States, winning a gold medal at the 2000 Games in Sydney and a silver medal at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. His swim at the Sydney Games was a world record that stood for nearly a year until it was broken by Michael Phelps in 2001.

More known for his long-course swimming, Malchow swam for Michigan from 1996-99 under fellow ISHOF inductee Jon Urbanchek. He won a national championship as part of the 800-yard freestyle relay team in 1997 (alongside Chris Rumley, John Reich and John Piersma) and was a three-time Big Ten individual champion in the 200-yard butterfly, winning the event from 1997-99. Malchow was also the 1998 Big Ten Swimmer of the Year and was an NCAA All-American during all four of his years at Michigan.

Malchow is the 21st inductee into the International Swimming Hall of Fame with ties to the University of Michigan swimming and diving program. Criteria for selection into the Hall of Fame include achievements at the Olympic, World Championship and national levels, as well as world records held. Here is the full list:
