PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan senior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) was named the 2012 Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Year on Wednesday (March 28). Madwed won four Big Ten championships as well as five All-America honors this season. His award is the 17th in Wolverine history and the fourth in the last five years.

Madwed recently wrapped up his career at the 2012 NCAA Championships (March 22-24) in Federal Way, Wash., winning five All-America citations, highlighted by his fourth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly and fifth-place swim in the 200-yard butterfly. Madwed also took part in the 400-yard medley relay (sixth), 200-yard medley relay (sixth) and the 800-yard freestyle relay (fifth) and earned honorable mention in the 200-yard individual medley (13th) and 400-yard freestyle relay (ninth).

Prior to NCAAs, Madwed collected four Big Ten championships, as he won the 100- and 200-yard butterfly events and was a member of the 400-yard and 800-yard freestyle relays en route to being named Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships. In addition, he was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 8 for the fourth time in his career for his performance against Indiana and Texas Nov. 4-5.

Madwed concludes his NCAA career with 14 All-America honors, as well as 14 Big Ten championships to his name. The 2011-12 team co-captain was a four-time All-Big Ten first team honoree and holds the Michigan, Big Ten and Big Ten Championships meet record in the 200-yard butterfly (1:41.70).

The senior collected several academic awards, including the Big Ten Conference Medal of Honor, awarded to a member of Michigan's graduating class who has demonstrated proficiency in scholarship as well as athletics, and is a four-time U-M Academic Achievement award winner. Also on Wednesday, Madwed was named to the Academic All-Big Ten team.

Madwed will next swim at the 2012 United States Olympic Trials that are being held June 25-July 2 in Omaha, Neb.
