VICTORIA, British Columbia -- Senior/junior Hassaan Abdel Khalik (Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate) and sophomore Richard Funk(Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) of the University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team each qualified for 2013 FINA World Championships during the Swimming Canada World Championship Trials, which ran from Wednesday, April 3, to Saturday, April 6, at Saanich Commonwealth Place.
Abdel Khalik qualified in two events, finishing third in the 100-meter freestyle (50.57) and fourth in the 200-meter freestyle last Wednesday (April 3). He also swam on two relays, taking second as part of both the 4x100-meter freestyle relay (3:26.31) and 4x200-meter freestyle relay (7:30.61).
Funk qualified by winning the 100-meter breaststroke (1:00.87). He also tied for first in the 200-meter breaststroke (2:14.84) but declined a swim-off, as his spot on the roster was already cemented. Funk also took third in the 50-meter breaststroke (28.20).
The 2013 FINA World Championships will be held from July 19 to Aug. 4 in Barcelona, Spain.
