ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head men's swimming and diving coach Mike Bottom announced today (Thursday, April 16) the addition of three student-athletes:Sam Hoekstra(Grandville, Mich./Grandville),Alexander Hoff(Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) and Demetrios Karedis(Allentown, Pa./Parkland), who each will join the Wolverines' 2009-10 recruiting class.
Hoekstra won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle relay crowns in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division I state meet, setting new Division I records in both events. Hoekstra captured the 50-yard crown with a time of 20.41 and earned the 100-yard title with a time of 44.46. He set the new 100-yard mark in the prelims with a time of 44.28. Hoekstra was also a member of two state championship relays, the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.46) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:07.09), while helping Grandville to a third-place team finish.
Hoff claimed three state titles recently at the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association 3A state meet. Hoff claimed top honors in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 49.79 while also swimming the leadoff leg on the state record-setting 200-yard medley relay (1:34.25) and the first-place 400-yard freestyle relay (3:06.71). Hoff also claimed second place in the 200-yard individual medley (1:50.45) while helping Mercer Island win the Washington 3A state crown.
"Both Sam Hoekstra and Alexander Hoff were sought after by many schools," said Bottom. "Them coming here helps give us the kind of team that we need to move forward in our national championship hopes."
Karedis qualified for the championship final in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle at the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association AAA state meet. Karedis claimed sixth place in the 50 free with a time of 21.14 (20.90 prelims) and also earned sixth in the 100 free, clocking in at 46.40.
Hoekstra, Hoff and Karedis join the 11 recruits, Kasey Allen(Louisville, Ky./duPont Manual), Hassan Abdel-Khalik(Mississauga, Ontario/Silverthorn Collegiate Insitute),Ryan Feeley(Rye, N.Y./Rye),Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./Madison),Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg),Eric Huffman(Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington),Connor McCarroll(Portland, Ore./Jesuit),Andrew Novakoff(Lighthouse Point, Fla./Pine Crest School),Michael Swain (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron),Roman Willets (Whitehouse, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) and Kevin Wilson (Short Hills, N.J/Seton Hall Prep), signed by Bottom this past November during the early signing period.
