U.S. Pan Pacific Championships Roster

IRVINE, Calif. -- Former University of Michigan men's swimmers Tyler Clary (2008-10) and Connor Jaeger (2011-14) each won national championships last week (Aug. 6-10) at the Phillips 66 National Championships, held at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Complex. Clary won titles in the 200-meter backstroke (1:54.73) and 400-meter IM (4:09.51), while Jaeger took top honors in the 1,500-meter freestyle (14:51.06).

At the conclusion of the meet, both men were officially named to the 2014 U.S. Pan Pacific Championships roster, joining another former U-M swimmer, Sean Ryan (2011-14), who had already previously qualified for the 10K.

Outside of Jaeger (who also took third in the 400-meter freestyle and 10th in the 200-meter freestyle), the distance group was strong yet again. Ryan was fourth in the 1,500-meter freestyle and sixth in the 400-meter freestyle, while Ryan Feeley (2010-13) had a trio of finals appearances: sixth in the 800-meter freestyle, seventh in the 400-meter freestyle and eighth in the 1,500-meter freestyle. Incoming freshman PJ Ransford (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford Mendon) was also sharp, finishing 13th in the 800-meter freestyle and 16th in the 1,500-meter freestyle. He will represent the U.S. at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China, beginning Sunday (Aug. 17).

Former NCAA All-American Kyle Whitaker (2011-14) was fifth in the 200-meter butterfly and, after scratching the 400-meter IM, went all-in for the 200-meter IM, where he finished seventh in a star-studded final that included four Olympic gold medalists (Clary, Ryan Lochte, Michael Phelps and Conor Dwyer). Michael Wynalda (2011-14) also made a championship final, taking seventh in the 200-meter freestyle.

Two swimmers that showed marked improvement were rising sophomores Chris Klein (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) and Vinny Tafuto (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey). Klein had three finishes inside the top 25 (22nd in the 200-meter breaststroke, 24th in the 50-meter breaststroke, 25th in the 100-meter breaststroke), while Tafuto had two of his own (22nd in the 100-meter butterfly, 24th in the 50-meter butterfly).

Several of these swimmers are also up for roster spots on the United States' rosters for the Junior Pan Pacific Championships, World Championships and Pan American Games. Those rosters will be announced at a later date by USA Swimming.
