ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Junior Richard Funk (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) of the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team was named Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week, the conference office announced on Tuesday (Oct. 29).
In wins over Indiana and Texas last Friday (Oct. 25) in Bloomington, Ind., Funk won the 100-yard breaststroke (54.14) and 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.82) -- both NCAA 'B' times -- while also assisting to a win on the 200-yard medley relay (1:27.81). He currently ranks second in the nation in the 100-yard breaststroke and fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke, while the 200-yard medley relay ranks first.
He is the third different men's swimmer to receive the honor this year, joining junior Bruno Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) and senior John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy Prep). Ortiz won on Oct. 1, and Wojciechowski won on Oct. 15.
The Wolverines are back in action for the University of Michigan Open, to be held Fri.-Sun., Nov. 22-24, at Canham Natatorium.
