Eight Swimming Standouts Make Up 2014-15 Class

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan head swimming coach Mike Bottom announced on Tuesday (Nov. 19) the signing of eight high school swimmers to National Letters of Intent for the 2014-15 season. The signees include Alex Katz (Sarasota, Fla./Riverview), Bryce Kwiecien-Delaney (Hamilton, Ontario/Westmount Secondary), Paul Powers (Gainesville, Ga./North Hall), Ian Rainey (Westport, Conn./Staples), PJ Ransford (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford), Tristan Sanders (Oldsmar, Fla./Palm Harbor University), Aaron Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) and Evan White (Oakville, Ontario/Iroquois Ridge).

"Our coaching staff has done a great job of putting this class together, and we feel like it is one of the top three in the country this year," Bottom said. "It's a deep and versatile group. We have a strong senior class graduating at the end of the year. We need these young men to make an immediate impact."

The class includes six swimmers that are ranked among the Top 80 Prospects in the Class of 2014 (via CollegeSwimming.com): White (No. 11), Katz (No. 27), Sanders (No. 32), Whitaker (No. 36), Powers (No. 45) and Ransford (No. 76). In addition, four swimmers represented their respective countries at the FINA World Junior Championships this past August in Dubai, UAE: Katz and Powers for the United States; Kwiecien-Delaney and White for Canada. Also, Katz, Powers and Whitaker are all members of the 2013-14 USA Swimming Junior National Team, while Kwiecien-Delaney and White are members of the Canadian Developmental (Junior) Team.

Katz is primarily a backstroke and middle distance swimmer and trains with the Sarasota (Fla.) YMCA Sharks. At the FINA World Junior Championships, he took fourth in the 200-meter backstroke and won a bronze medal as part of the 800-meter freestyle relay team. He also swam the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle. At the 2013 USA Swimming Junior National Championships, Katz won the 200-meter backstroke and 800-meter freestyle and finished third in both the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle. At the 2012-13 Florida Boys & Girls 3A Championships, he took second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard backstroke.

Katz Top Times: 1:50.17 LCM/1:36.98 SCY in the 200 Freestyle, 3:53.78 LCM/4:24.99 SCY in the 400/500 Freestyle, 8:04.77 LCM/8:57.80 SCY in the 800/1,000 Freestyle, 1:58.83 LCM/1:45.49 SCY in the 200 Backstroke, 4:22.53 LCM/3:55.77 SCY in the 400 IM

Kwiecien-Delaney is primarily a sprint freestyle swimmer and trains with Oakville Aquatic Club, the same club as fellow signee White and current U-M women's swimmers Marni Oldershaw and Sharalynn Missiuna. He swam on two relays at the FINA Junior World Championships, finishing fourth on the 400-meter freestyle relay and swimming on the 400-meter freestyle mixed relay. Prior to that, Kwiecien-Delaney won the 100-meter freestyle at the Canadian National Championships. He holds 12 Canadian National Age Group championships and 10 National Age Group records.

Kwiecien-Delaney Top Times: 50.71 LCM in the 100 Freestyle, 55.69 LCM in the 100 Butterfly

Powers is primarily a sprint freestyle swimmer and trains with Splash Aquatic Club. He is considered to be among the top five American sprinters in the Class of 2014, according to SwimSwam.com. Powers is the reigning Georgia High School state champion and record holder in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. At the 2013 USA Swimming Junior National Championships, Powers took seventh in the 100-meter freestyle.

Powers Top Times: 22.53 LCM/19.91 SCY in the 50 Freestyle, 49.94 LCM/43.99 SCY in the 100 Freestyle

Rainey is primarily a distance swimmer and trains with the Wilton Y Wahoos Swim Club. At the 2013 YMCA National Championships, Rainey won the 1,500-meter freestyle. At the 2013 USA Swimming Junior National Championships, he finished eighth in the 400-meter individual medley.

Rainey Top Times: 8:13.99 LCM/9:02.35 SCY in the 800/1,000 Freestyle, 4:23.97 LCM/3:54.45 SCY in the 400 IM

Ransford is primarily a distance swimmer and trains with the PACK Swim Team of Pittsford. Ransford finished second in the 1,500-meter freestyle at the 2013 U.S. Open. At the 2013 Speedo Champions Series in Buffalo last March, he took first in the 800-meter freestyle and 1,500-meter freestyle, second in the 400-meter IM and 400-meter freestyle, fourth in the 200-meter freestyle, sixth in the 200-meter butterfly and eighth in the 200-meter IM.

Ransford Top Times: 4:01.31 LCM/4:26.11 SCY in the 400/500 Freestyle, 8:12.59 LCM/9:16.04 SCY in the 800/1,000 Freestyle, 15:35.91 LCM/15:45.04 SCY in the 1,500/1,650 Freestyle

Sanders is primarily a backstroke swimmer and trains with the Palm Harbor YMCA Piranhas. At the 2012-13 Florida Boys & Girls 3A State Championships, Sanders won the 100-yard backstroke and finished fourth in the 50-yard freestyle. At the 2013 NCSA Junior National Championships, he finished sixth in the 200-yard backstroke. At the 2013 YMCA National Championships, he won the 200-meter backstroke and took second in the 100-meter backstroke and fourth in the 50-meter freestyle.

Sanders Top Times: 56.83 LCM/49.63 SCY in the 100 Backstroke, 2:03.04 LCM/1:45.87 SCY in the 200 Backstroke

Whitaker primarily focuses on the butterfly and backstroke and trains with Duneland Swim Club. He is the younger brother of current U-M swimmer Kyle Whitaker. He holds Indiana state records in the 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard backstroke and has won four state titles. Whitaker swam five events at the 2013 USA Swimming Junior National Championships, with his highest finish coming in the 100-meter butterfly (fourth).

Whitaker Top Times: 53.38 LCM/47.33 SCY in the 100 Butterfly, 2:03.18 LCM/1:46.91 SCY in the 200 Butterfly, 47.29 SCY in the 100 Backstroke, 1:50.69 SCY in the 200 IM

White swims multiple events but primarily focuses on the individual medley, breaststroke and butterfly and trains with Oakville Aquatic Club. He is a club teammate of fellow signee Bryce Kwiecien-Delaney. White is rated as the top international recruit in the Class of 2014, according to CollegeSwimming.com. At the 2013 FINA World Junior Championships, he finished fifth in the 200-meter IM. White is a Canadian National Age Group record holder in the 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter IM (Boys 15-17). At the 2013 Canada Summer Games, he won six gold medals and one bronze medal, winning individual titles in the 200-meter butterfly, 200-meter breaststroke, 100-meter butterfly and 200-meter IM, as well as first-place finishes on the 400-meter medley and 400-meter freestyle relays.

White Top Times: 51.06 LCM in the 100 Freestyle, 2:17.56 in the 200 Breaststroke, 54.05 LCM in the 100 Butterfly, 2:00.83 LCM in the 200 Butterfly, 2:00.31 LCM in the 200 IM, 4:23.54 LCM in the 400 IM
