PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- Senior Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) and freshman Dylan Bosch (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College, Sandton) of the No. 1-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team were named Big Ten Co-Swimmer of the Week and Freshman of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday (Dec. 4).
Ortiz won a trio of individual events at the Hawkeye Invitational over the weekend (Nov. 30-Dec. 2), pulling down seven NCAA times, including NCAA automatic-qualifying times in the 200-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard medley relay and 200-yard medley relay. He swam NCAA 'B' times in four other races, finishing first in the 100-yard butterfly (46.79), 50-yard freestyle (19.83) and 100-yard backstroke (46.67), and tying for second in the 100-yard freestyle (43.82). Ortiz, who was also named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week back on Oct. 30, shares the award this week with Ohio State's Jason Schnur.
Bosch claims his fourth Big Ten Freshman of the Week honor after scoring a trio of top-three finishes at the Hawkeye Invitational. He won the 200-yard butterfly (1:43.61), finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:46.39) and took third in the 400-yard individual medley (3:50.70). All three performances were NCAA 'B' times.
Michigan returns to the pool on Thursday, Jan. 3, when it wraps up its annual training trip with the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo, Fla. The meet will begin at 2 p.m.
