ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed the doubles point and three singles matches en route to a 4-3 win over TCU in its dual-match season opener Saturday evening (Jan. 19) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
The dual began with the Wolverines winning two of three doubles matches to garner the first point of the match, claiming victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. All three doubles matches were tightly contested, as each court was decided by a tiebreaker. After splitting the first two matches off the court, U-M's 30th-ranked tandem of senior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep) and junior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Old Bethpage JFK HS) sealed the point, coming back from a 5-2 deficit to earn an 8-7(2) decision over TCU's Max Stevens and JT Sundling at the top of the doubles lineup.
Sophomore Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) increased Michigan's lead to 2-0 to begin singles play, notching a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sundling at the No. 4 position. But despite digging themselves an early hole, the Horned Frogs ripped off three consecutive singles victories -- at the No. 2, 3 and 6 positions -- to take a 3-2 lead in the back-and-forth match.
With the fate of the dual still undecided, two singles matches were still ongoing. At No. 5, junior Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) rallied past Orlando Superlano, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (3), to tie the dual. Franks was down a break to start the final set but managed to dig himself out of 5-4 and 6-5 deficits to force a tiebreaker, in which he prevailed, 7-3. Minutes later, Michigan secured the victory as King won a three-set match at No. 1, beating Nick Chappell (6-4, 3-6, 6-3).
The Wolverines will return to competition next Friday (Jan. 25) against Santa Clara at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Berkeley, Calif. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. PST.
