BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped its first match of the 2013 dual-match season Saturday afternoon (Jan. 26), suffering a 4-3 loss to No. 14-ranked California in the championship match of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Hellman Tennis Complex. After dropping the doubles point, the Wolverines won three of the first four singles matches to take a 3-2 lead, but the Golden Bears claimed both of the remaining matches in three sets to clinch the victory.

California won the match's doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. The match at No. 1 featuring the 30th-ranked pair of senior Evan King (Chicago, Ill//Kaplan) and junior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) was abandoned after the Golden Bears clinched the doubles point. King and Bernstein were tied with the seventh-ranked tandem of Ben McLachlan and Riki McLachlan, 6-6, when the point was secured.

California jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the match after Gregory Bayane defeated Bernstein, 6-3, 6-1, in the first match off the court. Facing a 2-0 deficit, Michigan needed to win four of the remaining five singles matches.

Junior Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') started Michigan off on the right foot, notching a 6-4, 6-1 decision over 93rd-ranked Mads Engsted at the No. 6 position. King followed at No. 1, defeating 66th-ranked Ben McLachlan, 6-3, 7-5, to tie the match at 2-2. With the victory, King picked up his 60th career dual win and improved to 6-0 in the month of January.

Sophomore Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) put the Wolverines in the lead for the first time with a 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 win over Campbell Johnson at No. 3. He trailed 5-3 in the third set before stringing together four straight games to secure the match. Shortly thereafter, California tied the match at 3-3 thanks to a 3-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 win by No. 42-ranked Christoffer Konigsfeldt over No. 48-ranked Vlad Stefan (Bucharest, Romania) at No. 2.

In the last match on the court, Riki McLachlan edged out sophomore Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) at No. 5, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4, to clinch the team victory for the Golden Bears.
