DURHAM, N.C. -- The No. 24-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team lost to No. 14 Duke, 7-0, on Friday (Jan. 28) in the opening round of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center.

The Blue Devils won the match's doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. The match at No. 2 featuring freshman Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and sophomore Chris Cha (Eureka, Mo./University of Missouri H.S.) was abandoned after Duke clinched the doubles point. Bernstein and Cha were trailing Jared Pinsky and Fred Saba (Duke), 8-7, when the point was won.

Duke transferred the momentum over from doubles into singles, and won matches in straight sets at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 to clinch the match. Bernstein had a chance to give Michigan a point, winning the first set over Fred Saba (Duke), and was leading 4-3 in the second set. However, Saba won the final three games in that set and won the super tiebreaker to give Duke its fifth point. Duke closed out the match with wins at Nos. 1 and 2, as U-M sophomore Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan) and senior Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance) both lost to top-10 opponents.
