ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a back-and-forth match that spanned nearly three hours, the University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to North Carolina State on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 2) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The Wolfpack clinched the dual in the final match on the court, as 50th-ranked Austin Powell defeated junior Vlad Stefan (Bucharest, Romania) in three sets (6-2, 3-6, 6-4) at the No. 1 singles position. Trailing 5-1 in the third set, Stefan won three consecutive games -- breaking Powell's serve on two occasions -- to pull within a game at 5-4. But Powell broke Stefan's serve on the next service game, escaping the comeback bid to give North Carolina State the dual-match victory.

Michigan earned ranked singles victories from junior Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) and Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep), at the No. 2 and No. 4 positions. Petrone extended his winning streak to four matches with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 triumph over 82nd-ranked Thomas Weigel, while Buzzi notched his second singles dual win of the season with a 6-1, 6-5 (3) decision over 83rd-ranked Nick Horton.

The Maize and Blue posted the first team point of the match, earning the doubles point for the fifth consecutive match with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The U-M tandem of senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) were first off the court, picking up a 6-3 victory over Powell and Beck Bond at the No. 3 spot. After the Wolfpack earned a 6-5 (1) decision at the No .2 spot, the Wolverines' No. 1 duo of Buzzi and senior Barrett Franks (Christchuch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) clinched the doubles point, upsetting North Carolina State's 19th-ranked tandem of Horton and Sean Weber in a tiebreaker, 6-5 (5).

The Wolverines return to action next Friday (Feb. 7), hosting 14th-ranked Texas at the Varsity Tennis Center at 6 p.m.
