ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Despite earning the doubles point early, the No. 31st-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team could not sustain that momentum, falling to No. 10 Texas, 5-2, on Friday night (Feb. 7) inside the Varsity Tennis Center. The Longhorns won five of six singles matches to secure the victory.

Michigan won the doubles point for the sixth time in six dual matches, courtesy of wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The U-M tandem of senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) were first off the court, improving to 5-0 as a duo with a 6-2 victory over David Holiner and Jacoby Lewis at the No. 3 spot.

A few minutes later, the Wolverines' No. 1 duo of Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and senior Barrett Franks (Christchuch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) clinched the doubles point, upsetting Texas' fifth-ranked pairing of Soren Hess-Olesen and Lloyd Glasspool, 6-4. Buzzi and Franks have won all five of their doubles matches to start the 2014 campaign, including three straight victories over top-20 ranked opponents.

U-M could not transfer that momentum into singles play, as Texas stormed to first-set wins on four of the six courts on its way to pulling out victories at the No. 1-5 singles positions. Buzzi (No. 4 singles), Franks (No. 5 singles) and Wong (No. 6 singles) each went to three sets, but only Wong was able to come out on the winning end, earning a hard-fought 6-4, 4-6, 6-5 (4) decision over Holiner in the last match on the court.

The Wolverines return to action on Sunday (Feb. 9), wrapping up their weekend slate with a doubleheader against No. 13 Duke (Noon) and Youngstown State (5:30 p.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
