ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Carter Lin came away with a 7-4 in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 6 to clinch the No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team's 4-3 win over No. 15-ranked Kentucky on Saturday afternoon (Feb. 18) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

Michigan took the doubles point with convincing wins at No. 1 and No. 3. Senior Jathan Malik and freshman Connor Johnston went up a break at 4-2 and increased their lead to 5-2 on a service hold from Johnston. In the next game, UK double faulted on a deuce point to give U-M a 6-2 win.

Moments later, U-M wrapped up the first point behind a 6-2 win at No. 3 from senior Kevin Wong and sophomore Myles Schalet. The pair went up a break a 2-1 and never looked back, clinching the doubles point for the Maize and Blue.

Kentucky won the first two singles matches off court, taking a 2-1 lead.

Schalet quickly changed that, winning 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 to tie the team match at 2-2. Schalet recovered from an early break in the first set to take control of his match, knocking off No. 17-ranked Ryotaro Matsumura.

Attention shifted to courts No. 1 and No. 5, where Malik was in a third set at the top spot and junior Alex Knight was mounting a second-set comeback at No. 5.

Knight put the third Wolverine point on the board, winning 6-3, 7-5 at No. 5. Knight was down a break at 5-3 in the second before ripping off four straight games for the win.

Malik and William Bushamuka exchanged breaks in the third set but Bushamuka broke late and served out the match in the ensuing game to knot the team score at 3-3.

Lin had just started a third set at No. 6 and fell in an early 3-1 hole in the only match left on court. The Wolverine junior broke back and tied the match at 3-3. From there, both players stayed on serve to send the final set to a tiebreaker. Lin broke a 2-2 tie and never looked back, clinching the match for the Wolverines with a 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (4) win.

The Wolverines are at Cal Poly next Sunday (Feb. 26) to start their annual spring break trip. The match is slated for 1:30 p.m. PST.
