ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After dropping the doubles point, the No. 33-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team took five of six singles matches to earn a 5-2 victory over 30th-ranked LSU on Friday night (Feb. 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The Wolverines began the match by dropping the doubles point for only the second time this season, falling at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. LSU's top duo of 30th-ranked Chris Simpson and Boris Arias defeated seniors Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and senior Barrett Franks (Christchuch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School), 8-3, at the top of the lineup in the first match off the court. Shortly thereafter, the Tiger tandem of Tam Trinh and Justin Butsch downed juniors Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) and Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) in a tiebreaker, 8-7 (3), at the No. 2 position to earn the first point of the match. Senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) led Andrew Korinek and Eric Perez, 7-6, at the No. 2 position when doubles play was abandoned.

Michigan tied the dual at 1-1 after redshirt junior Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep) picked up his second dual victory of the season by knocking off Justin Butsch, 6-2, 6-2, in the first singles match off the court. Simpson put LSU back in front with a 6-3, 6-3 decision over junior Vlad Stefan (Bucharest, Romania) at the No. 1 position, but minutes Buzzi tied the match, 2-2, with a 7-6, 6-3 win over Trinh at the No. 4 spot.

Franks secured U-M's third point of the dual, notching a 6-4, 7-5 decision over Harrison Kennedy at the No. 6 position. Moments later, Petrone clinched the dual-match for the Maize and Blue by posting a 6-2, 7-6 (1) victory over Korinek at the second singles position. Petrone, who has won five of his last six singles matches, won seven of the first eight points in the second-set tiebreaker to close out the match.

In the final match off the court, senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) earned a 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (5) decision over Arias at the No. 3 position. After splitting the first two sets, Bernstein won the match in a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-5.
