MALIBU, Calif. -- Senior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep) won the 100th singles match of his career, but the University of Michigan men's tennis team was unable to pull off the road upset, dropping a 4-3 decision at No. 12 Pepperdine on Wednesday (March 6) at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
In the loss, King became only the fifth Wolverine in program history to post 100 career singles victories, accomplishing the feat by defeating Pepperdine's seventh-ranked Sebastian Fanselow, 6-2, 6-4, at the No. 1 singles position. King extended his winning streak to 12 matches with the win. He is 9-0 in dual competition and is 15-3 overall this season.
The Maize and Blue jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point for the sixth time this season with victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The 14th-ranked tandem of King and junior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Old Bethpage JFK HS) notched an 8-5 victory over 27th-ranked Finn Tearney and Francis Alcantara at the top spot. Minutes later, juniors Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys') and Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) clinched the point, winning three of the final four games of the match to secure an 8-4 decision over David Sofaer and Mousheg Hovhannisyan.
Pepperdine evened the dual at 1-1 with a win at No. 6 singles, but sophomore Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) came through with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over No. 73 Alex Sarkissian at the third singles position to put the Wolverines back in front. The Waves responded with a win at No. 2 to tie the dual, before King knocked off Fanselow to help give the Wolverines a 3-2 lead.
With only No. 4 and No. 6 singles left on the court, play was suspended for 30 minutes due to rain. Shortly after both squads returned to the court, Pepperdine won at No. 4 to knot the dual up at 3-3. In the final match on the court, Franks dropped a back-and-forth three-set match to Hovhannisyan at No. 6 to clinch the match for the Waves. Franks won the first set 6-3 before losing the next two (6-3, 7-5). Down 5-2 in the third and decisive set, Franks fought back to tie the match, 5-5, before dropping the final two games.
The Wolverines continue their Spring Break trip on Saturday (March 9), traveling to Austin, Texas, for a 1 p.m. CST match against the 15th-ranked Longhorns. Doubles action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CST at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center.
