HONOLULU -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team claimed the doubles point and the first three singles matches off the court en route to a 5-2 win at Hawaii on Thursday night (March 6) at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Wolverines began the dual by claiming the doubles point for the ninth time in 11 matches, earning victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. After a 45-minute rain delay midway through doubles action, U-M's No. 3 tandem of juniors Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) and Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) earned an 8-3 triumph over the team of Nils Schuhmann and David Schuster. Shortly thereafter, Michigan's No. 2 pairing of senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) clinched the point with an 8-7 (4) win over the Rainbow Warrior duo of Carter Lam and Marcel Chan. With the victory, Bernstein and Wong -- ranked 58th in the latest ITA doubles rankings -- improved to 8-0 during the dual-match season.

Transitioning to singles play, U-M posted three consecutive straight-set victories to wrap up the team victory. Zhu put the Wolverines ahead 2-0 after defeating Lam, 6-0, 6-4, in the first singles match off the court at No. 6, and Bernstein cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Danilo Casanova at No. 3 to give Michigan a 3-0 advantage.

Redshirt junior Justin Rossi (Novi, Mich./Laurel Springs Prep) clinched the dual for the Maize and Blue, moving past Chas Okamoto at the No. 4 position for his fourth consecutive singles victory.

With U-M leading 4-0 and the fate of the dual already decided, Hawaii registered its only two points of the match with back-to-back victories, at the No. 1 and No. 5 spots. In the final match off the court, Petrone earned a narrow victory over Schuhmann. After losing the first set, 4-6, the junior responded by winning the second set, 7-5, and the third-set tiebreaker, 10-4.

The Wolverines return to action next Saturday (March 15), hosting their second day-night doubleheader of the season at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M will square off against Columbia at 11 a.m. before concluding the doubleheader with a 6 p.m. tilt against Detroit.
