ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Playing its second match of the day, the University of Michigan men's tennis team dominated singles and doubles play en route to a 7-0 victory over Detroit on Saturday night (March 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

U-M began the dual by earning the doubles point for the 10th time in 13 matches, claiming victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions. Freshmen Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) and Tyler Gardiner (Novi, Mich./Northville) finished first, defeating Detroit's Bobby Cawood and Patryk Koscielski,, 8-4, at the No. 3 spot. Michigan's No. 2 tandem of juniors Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) and Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) followed with an 8-2 victory over Jay Joshi and Ismail Kadyrov to secure the initial point.

Transitioning to singles, Michigan won all six singles matches in straight sets. Petrone made quick work of Joshi at the No. 2 position (6-4, 6-2) as the first Wolverine off the court. Junior Vlad Stefan (Bucharest, Romania) followed by surrendering only six games in a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cawood at the top of the lineup. Moments later, senior Barrett Franks (Christchuch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) clinched the match for the Wolverines, notching a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Rafael Orantes Cuscattan at the No. 4 position.

Zhu, Wong and Gardiner rounded out U-M's singles wins at the No. 3, 5 and 6 positions, respectively. Making his collegiate dual-match debut, Gardiner cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Chance Conley at the No. 6 spot, while Zhu quickly moved past Koscielski, 6-2, 6-3 at the No. 3 position. In the final match on the court, Wong posted a 7-5, 6-2 decision over Kadyrov at the No. 5 singles spot.

U-M resumes Big Ten action next week, traveling to Columbus, Ohio, to take on rival Ohio State at 6 p.m. ET on Friday (March 21).
