COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Senior Shaun Bernstein (Plainview, N.Y./Plainview Old Bethpage JFK) earned a straight-set victory at the No. 3 singles position, but the University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 2 Ohio State on Friday (March 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center.

The Buckeyes began the dual by winning a tightly contested doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. After the OSU pairing of Chris Diaz and Herkko Pollanen earned an 8-7 (2) decision over juniors Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep) and Michael Zhu (Princeton, N.J./Keystone National) at the No. 3 position, OSU's fourth-ranked duo of Peter Kobelt and Kevin Metka secured the initial point with an 8-6 victory over U-M's 22nd-ranked tandem of seniors Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Barrett Franks (Christchuch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) at the top of the lineup.

The match at No. 2 featuring Bernstein and freshman Kevin Wong (Hong Kong/Diocesa) was abandoned after Ohio State clinched the doubles point. Bernstein and Wong led Hunter Callahan and Ralf Steinbach, 7-6, when the point was decided.

Ohio State transferred the momentum over from doubles into singles, and won consecutive matches at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 1 to clinch the match. After the fate of the dual was already decided, Steinbach knocked off Franks, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5, at the No. 6 position to give the Buckeyes a 5-0 advantage.

Shortly thereafter, Bernstein gave Michigan its only point of the match, notching a hard-fought 7-6 (6), 7-5 triumph over Pollanen. The victory marked Bernstein's fifth singles win during dual-match play.

The Buckeyes added one final point at No. 4, as Metka defeated redshirt junior Justin Rossi, 6-7 (2), 7-5, 7-6 (4).

U-M returns to action on Sunday (March 23), hosting its third day-night doubleheader of the season at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines will square off against 27th-ranked Penn State at noon before concluding the day with a 5 p.m. tilt against Youngstown State.
