MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 28-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team could not overcome an early deficit, falling to No. 44 Minnesota, 4-3, in the battle for the Little Brown Jug on Sunday afternoon (March 25) at the Baseline Tennis Center. It was the Wolverines' first Big Ten Conference defeat of the season.

Michigan dropped the doubles point for just the fifth time this season -- but second match in a row -- after losing on the No. 1 and No. 3 courts. Sophomores Alex Buzzi (Key Biscayne, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and Barrett Franks (Christchurch, New Zealand/Shirley Boys' School) picked up the Wolverines' lone doubles win at the No. 2 position, battling to an 8-7 (3) decision in the tiebreaker. They evened their dual-match record to 6-6 on the season.

The sophomore duo also accounted for two of Michigan's three singles wins. Franks was first off the court, temporarily knotting up the dual score with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Jack Hamburg at the No. 5 position.

The Golden Gophers won three straight matches, however, to clinch the dual before Buzzi and junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep) claimed victories to narrow the final score. Buzzi defeated Mathieu Froment, 7-5 (9), 2-6, 1-0 (7) for his fourth dual win at the No. 6 position, while King rallied to extend his win streak to seven straight matches with a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) victory over Rok Bonin at No. 1.

Michigan (9-5, 2-1 Big Ten) will return home next weekend to host a pair of Big Ten duals at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M will welcome Purdue at noon on Saturday (March 31) before closing the weekend on Sunday (April 1) with a noon slate against Indiana.
